FAQ

(Frequently Asked Questions)

  • What kind of protective gear did you wear?

The only thing my gear protected was my good clothes. I usually wore a camouflage ensemble that I thought of as my Chernobyl commando outfit. Ordinary clothes provide adequate protection from alpha and beta radiation. As for gamma radiation, only a lead suit will stop that. But lead is very heavy and to be practical in a suit, the layer of metal would have to be so thin that it would only stop 50 percent of the gamma rays. But that kind of suit would slow you down so much, you’d increase your exposure because you wouldn’t be able to move in and out of highly radioactive areas quickly. The only time I wore protective gear was in Burakivka, and it wasn't very effective.
